For most Student visa holders, the current work limit is 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session. Students can generally work unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks, subject to their visa conditions. Master's by research and doctoral students who have started their research degree may have different work-hour arrangements.

Minimum Wage

Australia's workplace laws protect international students.

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is AUD 26.44 per hour for employees covered by the National Minimum Wage, while award rates can differ by industry and employment circumstances. Casual employees covered by the National Minimum Wage receive a 25% casual loading, making the rate AUD 33.05 per hour. Most employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement, so the applicable rate depends on the job.

Post-Study Work Opportunities

Eligible graduates may be able to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).

The Temporary Graduate visa can allow eligible graduates to remain in Australia temporarily and work without the Student visa's work-hour restriction. Eligibility, stream, qualification requirements and stay period depend on the applicant's circumstances.

The current Post-Higher Education Work stream generally provides a temporary stay of around 2–3 years, depending on the qualification, while other streams have different requirements and durations.
